Preparing for the Millennium

January 1999

Christy Sims opened her house to us for this meeting. We discussed the upcoming year and planned for the next meeting at T.Y. Park.

February 1999

This meeting was held at T.Y. Park in conjuction with the Zeta Epsilon Chapter's (F.I.U.) Family Day. The Alum Chapter requested a merchandise box from Sigmaration and both collegians and alums purchased a load of Sigma paraphernalia!

Alums & Collegiates

March 1999

This meeting was held at Applebee's in Miami. Sisters had dinner and discussed the upcoming Founder's Day Brunch.

Founder's Day Brunch

On April 17th, Sherry Tarrio graciously hosted our Founder's Day again. We had two newcomers who attended, Dawn Jacob of Zeta Epsilon Chapter and Rachelle Phares of Alpha Kappa Chapter. Each member brought a brunch dish and we planned our meetings and activities for the coming Fall.

First Annual Summer Fling

On July 17th, a couple of Sigmas attended the First Annual Summer Fling at Carol Metevier's beautiful home on Ft. Lauderdale Beach. This function allows our significant others to meet and see what is so special about our monthly meetings. I was so happy to finally meet Carol and Scottie Keith who was also in attendance. We hope that this Summer get together can become an annual function as the Holiday and Founder's Day Brunches have been.

Web site

Our web site is always changing. I have changed it around a little and made it more user friendly. The new pages on the site include a Past Meetings page and a Newsletters page.

Join iGive is a website that allows for a percentage of your purchase to go toward the chapter. Each business that participates with iGive has different percentages that go to the chapter. You can check out their website and join to help out the chapter. There you will find the different percentages for the companies that participate. You can link to it below.

Also on our home page, I have added an email list that you can join. This way, we can all keep in touch and have an easy way to notify each other on up coming events and meetings.

There is also a site for potential members of our Chapter. For example, if someone is moving into the Dade/Broward area and is surfing around the net to see if the area has an Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma, they can find our site and click through to where it says "Join Our Chapter". Here they will encounter a form they fill out which asks them for specific information about themselves. Once they submit the form, it is automatically emailed to me. It gives me easy access to email them back and give them the information they requested on our chapter.

Being an active Tri Sigma Alumnae

What does it take? Not much.

What do I have to do? Nothing really.

Am I required to go to all the meetings? No.

Common questions, easy answers.

Nothing is mandatory about being in the Alumnae Chapter. We ask that you do pay the $20 local dues to help us defray the cost of mailing, printing, etc. We hope that you will come to the activities and meetings but it is not required. All we ask is that you attend at least one event per year. We try to vary the activities to keep the interests of all in mind. We alternate between counties. For example: If the January meeting is in Dade County then the February meeting will be in Broward. We do service projects on the local and national level. Our goal is reunite with old friends, make new friends, and keep a great network of Tri Sigma's in the South Florida areas. Every Tri Sigma is welcome to join. We are old, young, newly graduated and established in our own lives. We ALL share the same bond of steadfast sisterhood and Sigma. New members pop up at every meeting and activity. Hope to see you all at the next meeting.... :-)

Fall Meeting Dates

All dates, locations and times are confirmed. Please make an effort to attend.

September 12th

(Meeting changed from Sept. 4th - Labor Day Weekend.) Bid Day for Zeta Epsilon, FIU campus, in front of the Fountain, 9am.

This will be the first time we will have a meeting on Sunday. I thought it appropriate to meet on this day because it is Bid Day for the Zeta Epsilon Chapter at FIU. Originally, this meeting was scheduled to be in Dade County so I thought it was perfect to spend it welcoming new Tri Sigmas. Directions to FIU are below. Here is a map of the campus. Afterwards, we can hold our meeting and discuss plans for the October, November & December meetings.

DIRECTIONS TO F.I.U.

From Miami International Airport: Take 836 (Dolphin Expressway) West to the Turnpike Extension. Take the SW 8th Street (Tamiami Trail) exit east. Travel east on SW 8th Street (Tamiami Trail) to SW 107 Avenue. Turn right and use the second entrance into the campus. Follow the parking signs to the Graham Center Building.

From Ft. Lauderdale: Take the Florida Turnpike South to SW 8th Street (Tamiami Trail) east exit. Take SW 8th Street (Tamiami Trail) east to SW 107 Avenue. Turn right and use the second entrance into the campus. Follow the parking signs to the Graham Center Building.

FIU does not ticket on Sundays so feel free to park where you can.

October 2nd

This meeting's location has not yet been set. We are in the process of finding a Children's Center to go and read to the children as part of our local and national philanthropy. As I get the information, I will be sure and let everyone know the time and location. The only thing I ask is for anyone who attends this meeting to bring 3 or 4 children's reading books to donate to the center.

We will only be able to contact those whose phone number's and/or email addresses we have so if you want to attend this event and you aren't sure if we have your phone number and/or email address please email it to Kim.

November 6th

T.G.I. Friday's at International Mall. 10603 NW 12th Street, Miami, (305) 594-1816. We will collect National and Local dues and plan for the Holiday Brunch in December (see below).

Directions from the South: Take the Florida Turnpike North to the SR-836 East exit. Exit at the NW 107 Avenue Exit. Turn left at the light onto NW 107 Avenue. After the railroad tracks turn right at the light which should be NW 12 Street. Friday's is on the left.

Directions from SR-836: Go west on SR-836 towards the Florida Turnpike. Exit North at NW 107 Avenue. Turn right which merges you onto NW 107 Avenue. Cross the railroad tracks and turn right at the light which should be NW 12 Street. Friday's is on the left.

Directions from the North (via the Florida Turnpike): Take the Florida Turnpike South to Exit 26 (SR-836 East/Miami International Airport/NW 107 Avenue). Follow the sign to NW 107 Avenue/International Mall. The road is a long winding road and you are going to exit to the left. Follow the road around. You will pass FHP (Florida Highway Patrol). Just keep following the signs to NW 107 Avenue. You are going to go straight through a light and then the road curves. Follow the sign to Miami International Mall. At the next light (NW 107 Avenue) you are going to go straight through and then turn right toward Dillards and J.C. Penney. Pass La Carretta and Rooms to Go which are on the right. The next right, where La Ideal Baby Store is, turn right and then turn left into the parking lot of T.G.I. Friday's.

December 4th

The Second Annual Holiday Lunch. Sherry Tarrio's home, 10:30 a.m. Please email Kim for directions. We will be making care packages for the FIU chapter and also bringing in items off the children's hospital wish list. We will also prepare Christmas cards for FIU and Lynn University and collect Chapter and National dues. Each member is requested to bring in study items for the Collegiates and at least one item off of the wish list. You will be reminded as the brunch date gets closer.
